Our Holy Mission

The mission of the IPBYS Outreach Prison Seva program is to turn prisoners away from their criminal ways and to help them begin an inward journey to prema (pure love of God).

We do this by giving them the mercy of the sages, and the keys of divine knowledge as contained in the transendental literatures of ancient India.

These literatures bestow the blessings of full fledged freedom, for which we should all be hankering at every step of our life's journey.

The sad truth is that many people who are released from prison - even if given an education, job, or a place to stay - if their hearts have not changed, they wind up there again. Our mission is to correct at the very root.

Srila Narayana Maharaja:

The problem in this world, such as crime, can only be stopped by the preaching of the glories of the Supreme Lord. We have to understand why people are performing activities like beating others, killing others, and stealing others' money. They are doing this with one intention - to become happy.

We tell them, "No one can be happy by material activities." The individual spirit souls will become happy only if they keep the Supreme Lord in the center of their lives and perform all of their endavors to please Him.

Those who are with me have given upall criminal activity, all bad habits, and all kinds of wicked acts - naturally and Automatically.

Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:

In the prison house no one can violate the jail rules and regulations, and violating the rules means another term for extension of prison life. Similarly we in this material existence are always fearful. The fearfulness is called anxiety. Everyone in the material life, in all species and varieties of life, is full of anxieties, either by breaking or without breaking the laws of nature.

Liberation, or mukti, means getting relief from these constant anxieties. This is possible only when the anxiety is changed to the devotional service of the Lord.
